About Emily

Emily Woodley

Meet Emily

We all get in the water for a reason……..

The water and the outdoors have always been an important part of my life and when I can I like to spend time by, on or in the water.  Swimming has always been my go to activity.

I have a professional background in skills, learning, advice and guidance and a passion for personal development.  I believe learning can happen anywhere, anytime and in many different ways.

I am a qualified, insured and DBS checked STA Open Water Swimming Coach (Tutored by Keri-Anne Payne), Swimming Teacher and SurfLifeSavingGB First Aider.  I have current training in Open water Swimmer Safety and Rescue (tutored by Coast to Coast Water Safety)

In my teens and twenties, I took part in a number of personal development opportunities which used the dynamic nature of the outdoors to encourage taking personal responsibility and contributing in a team environment.  Both are helpful abilities for swimming, especially in open water.

I competed at school, university and club level in hockey and Cornish pilot gig racing and understand the commitment and intensity of the physical training, the mental and the emotional preparation required for competitive events.  These days I’m less competitive and prefer to participate in events that challenge.

I swim both skins (in a swimming costume) and in a wetsuit, it all depends on where I am, who I’m swimming with, how I feel and what the conditions are like.

See you in the water soon

“Was extremely lucky to find Emily to help me with my preparation for Ironman triathlons in 2022. Her calm, thoughtful tuition really helped me to relax in the open water, and she helped enormously with techniques such as sighting and breathing properly. Despite a very rough sea swim, I came second in my age group at Ironman Wales, and then won the British Middle Distance triathlon championship. Thank you so much, Emily - looking forward to learning even more from you in 2023!”

“You’re never too old or experienced to learn about swimming in the outdoors and sea.  Having entered the Scilly Swim Challenge, I needed guidance & help to prepare for what was to be my biggest ever swim.  Emily is wonderful and her knowledge & own experiences helped me enormously.  I knew I’d be a faffer with all my kit, Emily advised on what I’d need, how to pack it and carry it. Meeting her for training swim/walks with my kit was invaluable”.
